Continuing with part one of the satellite television glossary we wanted to address items from “L” to “Z”. Again, this information makes for a great reference point for new and existing satellite television users.
Limits – Feature that allows users to set programs for preferred viewing
LNB – Device located on the front arm of the satellite dish
Locks – Ability to restrict access to specific features on the receiver
Mailbox – Similar to email, which lets a service provider send messages electronically
Main Menu – Variety of options from which to choose for using the service provided by the satellite provider
Mast – Pipe that helps support the actual satellite dish
Mounting Foot – Part of the dish antenna, helping mount the mast to the dish
MDU – Stands for “Multiple Dwelling Unit” for townhouses, condominiums, and apartments
MPEG2 – Video compression method used to combine a number of several programs into one satellite transponder
Multi-Satellite Dish – To receive programming that extends further than the satellite provider’s core programming, broadcast satellites must be maintained
Multi-Satellite Switch – Satellite receiver with one input connection, which accommodates the Multi-Satellite Dishes provided by DISH Network and DirecTV
Must Carry – Condition established by the FCC in which a service provider carrying one local network in a specific market must also carry all of the local networks for that same market
National Standards and Testing Programs – Also known as NSTP, this program was devised to provide basic installation training for technicians installing satellite television
NTSC – Acronym for “National Television Standards Committee”, this video standard was established by the United States and then adopted by other countries
National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative – Called NRTC as well, this organization provides telecommunication services to rural telephone and electric cooperatives
OTA – Stands for “Over the Air”, which is a term often used when describing standard television broadcast signals received by a rooftop antenna
Off Air – Means the same thing as OTA
Orbital Slots – Location of satellites around the globe
Oval Dish – Terms specific to DirecTV and their receivers to show a person is using a multi-satellite dish
Parental Lockout – Lets a user create a special password for controlling access to programming based on the content, rating, or even channel
Pay Per View – Also called PPV, this service allows the viewing of special events such as sporting, music, movie, or adult entertainment but at an additional price
Pixelization – Occurrence due to errors in decoding the MPEG bit stream areas or patches of color blocks rather than a high-resolution image
Point and Select – Form of navigating the menu
Program Guide – Listing of programs available to view
PVR – Acronym for “Personnel Video Recorder” that associated with a satellite receiver is the built-in hard drive that digitally records satellite television programs
Quad LNBF – Combination of multi-satellite switch and LNBF for DISH 500 systems
Rain Feed – Loss of signal due to weather, often associated with a rainy day
Rating Level – Standard rating level that is applied to movies and other programs, allowing the viewer to know ahead of time the violence, sex, or language content
Rating Limit – Allows certain access to be restricted based on movie or show ratings
Receiver – Unit that receives satellite dish signals and then converts them to appear on the television set
Remote Extender – After market devices allowing the use of an Infrared Remote (IR) to control the satellite receiver from another room of the home or business
R/F Connectors – Input/output screw located on the coaxial cable connections
RG-6 – Type of coaxial cable commonly used for digital satellite television installation. Additionally, RG-6 is a higher quality cable than that of RG-59.
RG-59 – Common type of coaxial cable used for the past 40 years
S-Video Jack – For televisions with an S-video cable input
Satellite – Sophisticated electronic communications relay station that orbits more than 22,000 miles above the equator
Satellite Dish – Dish used to collect signals coming from the orbiting satellite
Satellite Home Viewer Act – Sometimes referred to as SHVA
SBCA – The acronym for “Satellite Broadcasting Communication Association”, which is an organization of manufacturers, distributors, dealers, and program providers of satellite television
SBCA Certification – Also known as the National Standards and Testing Program
Smart Card – Same as Access Card
Solar Outage – Occurrence when a satellite dish faces the satellite but the sun passes in between
Splitter – Device that distributes a television signal carried on a cable going in two or more paths
Sports Subscription – Seasonal package of collegiate or professional games
Spot Beam – Satellite transmission focusing on a specific area within the satellite footprint
System Test – Function providing a standard test sequence, which evaluates problems with the satellite system
SW-21, SW-44, SW-64 – Multi-satellite switches used by DISH Network systems
Themes – Sorting capabilities of the program guide based on categories rather than time
Transponder – Component capable of receiving, modulating, amplifying, and retransmitting a signal
Twin 500 LNB – Component consisting of multi-satellite switch and LNBF for the DISH 500 system
UHF Remote – Acronym for “Ultra High Frequency”, which is a remote control operating the receiver from another room
Widescreen – Way in which picture displays on the television in a wider format
