THE EVER CHANGING WORLD OF SATELLITE TELEVISIONTelevision as we know it today is completely different from when it was first created in the 1920s. The technological standards were actually primitive although the concept would turn out to be one of the greatest of all time. Television today is not only something we use for entertainment, but also truly, the most valuable source of communication to literally millions of people around the globe. Look at wars and foreign affairs, with television we have a means by which to know what is going on and where our country stands. Other huge impacts of television on our society include cultural events, science, sports, and again, entertainment. Homes within the United States on average have not one, but multiple television sets. Considering that most homes have the television on seven hours every day, you can see just how important this type of technology is. Although earlier technology consisted of black and white, locally broadcasted channels, we now have so many more options to include over-the-air broadcasting, closed circuit, cable, satellite, commercial, DVDs, and VCRs. At the conclusion of World War II, keep in mind that just six television stations existed in the United States. Today, that number has grown to a staggering 1,500! In addition, 75% of commercial stations in this country are connected to the four major networks to include Fox, ABC, NBC, and CBS. Then when cable was developed, television went through another major change, certainly for the good. Today, cable goes through various service providers. The result is that the number of people who used to depend only on standard broadcasting has dropped by about 35%. In addition to the huge growth of cable, we have also watched satellite television being a common choice. For broadcasting of satellite, programming services are provided by national suppliers. The interesting thing about satellite is that viewing is very, focused, specific to various demographics. For the satellite provider to take on more channels, they pay a subscriber fee, which is then passed on to the customers. Keep in mind that just as with regular programming, cable and satellite services are governed by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC)/. Looking back at the launch of the first television in 1929 to where we are today, it is simple astounding. However, technology is continuing to change and grow, meaning the future for television will be even more exciting. For instance, one of the newer technology options is high-definition television or HDTV. With this, the clarity and audio capabilities of a high definition television set are unrivaled. With better technology, larger screens, and even new designs, the world of television is here to stay.
