CHOOSING SOUND FOR YOUR SATELITE TV HOME THEATER

We all know the importance of a large and clear television set for a home theater, as well as reliability such as satelite, the other aspect that needs close attention is sound. As you can imagine, watching the Super Bowl, a favorite movie, or some other special programming with outstanding image but cracking sound would not work. Quality sound will bring your home theater to life, making what you watch far more realistic.

As you begin to investigate your options for home theater sound, you will discover you have four primary options. First, there is mono, then stereo, next is encompassing, and finally, surround. Today, all but encompassing are available, producing exceptional results. Typically, a person creating a home theater will choose surround sound simply because it is the best, especially in this situation.

With surround sound, you want to think of individual speakers more as channels. Therefore, just as with satelite television, the greater number of channels the better the sound. In other words, more channels allow more information or audio to be transmitted. Additionally, the sound coming from digital sound is far better than the older technology of analog.

Think of it this way – satelite sound is capable of being reproduced in an infinite number without the quality of sound every being compromised. However, analog starts to become distorted the more changes made or the more reproductions that travel through. Of course, analog is not available for surround sound, only stereo. Choosing the best speakers you can afford will make a huge difference in how much you enjoy your show. Remember, speakers are a type of translator that decodes information in the form of digital signals.

Probably the toughest choice associated with surround sound has to do with choosing the right format for your needs. For this, two companies hold the majority of the market – Digital Theater Systems (DTS) and Dolby Laboratories. What becomes a little complicated is that each of these providers has a long list of possibilities. To make the process of choosing a little easier, consider the following:

  • Encoding for DTS uses less compression than Dolby, meaning the overall sound is clearer
  • DTS encoding is not used as often on television broadcasts and DVDs
  • Typically, Dolby is used for DVDs

Just keep in mind that if you have questions, both companies offer great customer support. The key to successful home theater sound is going with a system that matches the size of the room, the type of equipment you have, and of course, your personal viewing/listening needs. While you might be able to compromise on seating and lighting, sound quality makes your satelite tv home theater complete.
